The Department of Physical Education was founded in 2000 after the system reform of the institute. With the development of institute,the department has grown into a unit with a staff of 20 teachers and two offices in charge of the physical education for nearly 7,000 undergraduates.      The institute has a multi-function gym,a 400-meter standard rubber field, a gymnasium, a table tennis room,volleyball and basketball courts,and a tennis count,totally covering an area of 3,0000 square meters,which provides good conditions for teaching,disciplining and out-of-class sport activities.      The department offers a large variety of optional courses such as basketball,volleyball,table tennis,badminton,aerobics,teakwood,martial arts,modern ballroom dancing,artistic gymnastics,directional cross-country,track-and-field,gymnastics and so on,which enrich the choices of courses and arouse the interests of students.      While emphasizing teaching work,the P.E.Department also invests a lot of effort scientific research.In recent years it has published over 100 papers in the core periodicals.It has undertaken a sub-project of a national educational reform program,Reform and Practice on Serial Courses of Physical Education,and compiled a textbook,College Physical Education.      The school track-and-field team has come out first in total group points for four times on end at The University Tack-field meet in Beijing area since 1997.At The 9th National University Track-field Meet,the team won four gold,two silver and two copper medals.Moreover,in the Beijing International Road Relay in 2002,the female team came out second in the primary level group,topping all the participating universities.Additionally,the team has continuously taken part in the American"Grandma"Marathon for three times successively,which has enhanced the understanding and friendship between universities from different countries.      According to the needs of the 21st century, the P.E. Department will deepen the teaching reform,and improve the quality of training students to mend the requirements of the market economy.Also,the students should be cultivated into ones with overall development in morality,intelligence and physique.
