The school of material and chemical engineering includes three departments (applied chemistry, chemical engineering, and polymer material engineering), one faculty (basic and theoretical chemistry) and two research institutes (technology of modern chemical engineering, green chemistry and new catalytic materials), and two experimental training centers (chemistry ,chemical engineering). At present, the school provides four specialties as applied chemistry, chemical engineering and technology (ecotype), polymer material and engineering, environmental engineering (environmental chemistry and technology). Two other specialties as medicine manufacture engineering (medicinal chemicals synthesis), biological engineering (biochemical engineering) are in construction. In 1998, the specialty of chemical engineering and technology was appraised as a key constructional subject by SINOPEC (the former sponsor of the university). In 2002, the Beijing municipal government authorized the school as a main talent cultivation and scientific research base in the fields of environment protection and comprehensive utilization of resources.

    School of Material and Chemical Engineering was proud of a faculty team of high special ability. Among a staff of 68,there are 15 professors and 23 associate professors. Other 6 academicians of CAS, CAE and outstanding scholars are invited as part-time professor in the school. Area of laboratory is about 4600 square meters. Experimental instruments and equipments value 14 million RMB. All these have laid a sound foundation for constant progressing in teaching effect and scientific research level. In recent years, more than 20% undergraduate in the school can pass master degree entrance examination.

    In the past 5 years, the school has made great achievement in scientific research work. 50 projects from government authorities and enterprises had been accomplished. Research fund amounts to 12 million RMB. 11 prizes had been awarded by ministry authorities, 15 national patents authorized, 10 monographs and/or text books published, and more than 400 papers published in national and international journals. At present 23 projects funded by National Academic Committee, National Key Basic Research Plan (973), National Science Foundation Projects, Ministry of Education, Beijing government and several companies are under study. The total research fund is more than 8 million RMB.
